Colin Reed

I am very sorry to have to pass on the sad news that Colin Reed died, last week, at the age of 93. Colin was an honorary life member of the Guild and had rung at Balderton for many many years. Please remember Beryl and all the family in your thoughts and prayers.

Harry Poyner

We regret to announce that Harry Poyner, long-standing ringer, sadly passed away on 11th March, aged 92. He was a peal ringer on church bells and handbells, and over the years he, with his wife Mary, taught many people to ring.  He rang at East Retford for ten years from the mid 1960s.

The funeral will be at Whissendine church, Rutland, at 12 noon on Friday 31st March. There will be open ringing from 11am.

The family would appreciate knowing if you plan to attend in order to make catering arrangements.  Please let Hilary know on

Paul Loxston

Paul Loxston, formerly Tower Captain of Kirkby-in-Ashfield, died peacefully on 24th October 2022 aged 73 years.  A funeral service has already taken place.

Fred Barber, HLM

With sadness, I pass on the news that Fred Barber passed away earlier this week. Fred was formerly tower captain of Cotgrave and was recognised as an Honorary Life Member of the Guild in 2014.

Sharon Bryan – funeral arrangements – update 15/9/22

Please find below a message from Austin

“To dispel any doubts, Sharon’s funeral will go ahead as planned on Monday 19 September 2022. There will be open ringing from 11.30 am until 12.25 pm. After Mass there will be an arranged QP in celebration of Sharon’s life. Sharon didn’t think she looked good in black, so as far as clothing is concerned wear whatever colour you are comfortable in. No flowers, please, but if you would like to make a donation to a charity Sharon supported, this can be done on-line at www.funeralguide.co.uk/obituaries/103741.”

Sharon began her ringing adventure at Kings Norton in Birmingham in the late 1960’s. She and Austin moved to Essex shortly after their marriage in 1971. There they were welcomed into the Prittlewell band. For a time Sharon was Secretary to the Southern District of the Essex Association. In 1976 the Bryan family moved to Nottingham and, as there were no ringable bells in Clifton at that time, joined the St Peter’s Nottingham band. Towards the millennium Sharon joined the Clifton ringers who looked after ringing at St Mary’s Clifton, Holy Trinity, St Francis and subsequently Corpus Christi. From 2012 to the beginning of 2017, Sharon was Secretary to the South Notts District of the Southwell and Nottingham Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers.

May she rest in peace.

Thank you for your messages of support.
